Ready for another book review? Good. Because here’s one.

Four planes crash on the same day, in different parts of the world. On three of those flights, a single child inexplicably survives, and a mysterious voice recording from a dying passenger sets off a chain of events that could harbour the end of the world as we know it.

That’s the premise of THE THREE, a spooky supernatural thriller from Sarah Lots, out now in Hardback.

The book is written in the style of novel extracts, webchats, interviews and newspaper articles, each following various characters as they deal with the spooky goings on related to the survivors, as well as the fallout from an American Pastor outing the children as heralds of the apocalypse.

We follow Jess, cared for by her recovering alcoholic uncle who is troubled by horrific dreams.
Bobby, with his grandparents, displaying signs of mystical healing powers.
and Hiro, speaking only through an android copy of himself.

Are the children representations of the horsemen of the apocalypse (and if so, where is the 4th survivor?)? Are they aliens? Are they possessed by ghosts of vengeful Japanese spirits? The book lays on the mysteries thick and fast, but leaves the reader to make their own mind up.

The book covers themes including the oppressive nature of the press, differing cultures, religious extremism and covers bereavement and mourning maturely and with real emotional resonance. The climax of the book leaves more questions than answers, and ultimately leaves the reader unsettled and craving more.

The book is well written, with each character’s perspective coming across in an organic, unique style. The first-person accounts as well as real places, dates and unrelated news events give the story an air of authenticity, and the sense of urgency as matters escalate really draws you into the narrative.
