You know I love zombie films, I know most of you love zombie films, but do you ever think that maybe they’re a bit samey? Folk run from zombies, zombies eat most of the people, shenanigans occur.Well, here is something a little different, based on the web series of the same name, Zombie With A Shotgun is a new Indiegogo project aiming to shake up the genre, making the zombies (no doubt with shotguns) the heroes of the tale, battling for survival in a post-apocalyptic world.

If you want, you can head straight over to the Indiegogo site to contribute, but to whet your appetite, here’s a little Q&A session I did with Hilton Ariel Ruiz, the creator of the webseries and movie.

FUDGECRUMPET : Can you tell me about yourself, then?
HILTON ARIEL RUIZ: I’m from New York City. I love filmmaking and comics. I grew up in the 80’s when renting VHS tapes and going to the record shop was in style.

FC : What’s the project about?

HAR : Zombie with a Shotgun is going to be that zombie film where all the rules we know about zombie films go right out the window.
In this Zombie film, the zombie will be the hero and it will have others (zombies) to help out the war against the humans. The story follows Aaron who isn’t sure if he is infected with the zombie virus or some other infection. He takes this journey with his girlfriend Rachel and his shotgun where they both find out the deep secrets among the zombie virus and their love life.

FC : The web series (see above for the first episode) is pretty awesome, how much of that do you expect to see appearing in the final movie?
HAR : It’s basically a continuing of Aaron and Rachel. I’m not going to change anything. The fans like it the way it is, so I’m not going to touch it.
FC : How do you deal with zombie fanboy types? You’re playing around with the ‘rules’ of zombies, do you get much of a backlash?
HAR : Absolutely. I have many Zombie fanboys that tell me I can’t change the mythology of zombies. I don’t get it. I tell them why and they never have a good answer.

Concept Art from Zombie With A Shotgun

FC : What are your most influential zombie movies?
HAR : These are the Zombie movies that pop up in my head at the moment.
1) Night of the Living Dead.
2) 28 days later
3) Doomsday
4) Return of the Living Dead
5) Michael Jackson’s Thriller
FC : Some of your concept art looks pretty damn awesome, can we expect a comics adaptation or spin-off?
HAR : Both. As of now we’re working on the 1st issue of the comic. When it gets released, we’ll be able to know our next step.

FC: If (When) the project succeeds, what are your future plans? Do you have sequel plans or would you like to switch genres and do a fluffy rom-com?
HAR : LOL. I love to do a sequel for Zombie with a Shotgun.
FC : What’s the ‘thing’ about zombies that makes them such a good subject for movies?
HAR : I think with Zombie films, you can play around with the story in many different ways. You can make them funny, serious or both.
FC : And finally, most importantly… What’s your favourite cheese?

HAR : Being from NYC and loving my pizza, it has to be mozzarella cheese.
You can find out more about Zombie With A Shotgun by heading to the Indiegogo page, which has links to original web series as well as a whole bunch of rewards for donors, including bumper stickers, posters, DVDs and if you can get a plane ticket to LA, the chance to be a zombie in the actual movie. You can also follow Hilton and his cinematic journey on Twitter and Facebook, if you want to.
